Effie May Howard aka Rosie Lee Tompkins. A Juneteenth hanging. She did a series of pieces using men’s neckties.Her name and birthdate- Effie 9-6-36 along with the number 36 in the upper left corner. If you count there are 36 ties in the piece . That 36 number represents her . It references the year she is born( 9-6-36)you also see 68 in the right corner- her age at the time she made it. She tells you day what the day was she is thinking of, as well as her address at that time (220 Barrett ave Richmond California. Only two of the scriptures recorded actually refer to those scriptures. The rest are family birthdays that look like scriptures . She throws in Job 36 which again refers to herself. The slip of paper on the floor is mine. It was a cataloging number.

A beautiful piece of wood
saved from a big piece of work I didn't like.
Stitched.
Unstitched.
In fact, nothing felt right.
Till lines were chiselled
and my wonderful,
tiny veneer pins stepped in to take pride of place.
So now it looks fittingly
old, subtle and to be reverred
